Commended Students, National Recognition Students Congratulated

Sister Lisa D. Gambacorto, RSM, Ed.S., Directress of Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung congratulated the following students who have been named Commended Students in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Letters of Commendation from the Mount and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program were presented in the Parlor on Wednesday, September 27. Jacqueline Muratore (Assistant Directress for Faculty, Curriculum, and Planning) and Elizabeth Roper (Director of College Counseling) were present to congratulate the students.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2024 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students place among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Additionally, the following students were congratulated for earning academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These programs celebrate students' hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance. The academic honors for rural area, Black, Indigenous, and/or Latino students are an opportunity for students to share their strong academic achievements with colleges and scholarship programs that are seeking to recruit diverse talent.
  • Amelia Benjamin '24 received the National African American Recognition Award and the National Hispanic Recognition Award.
  • Mahalia Gorham '24 received the National African American Recognition Award and the National Indigenous Award.
  • Mikayla Sharif '24 received the National Hispanic Recognition Award.
The criteria for eligible students include: GPA of 3.5 or higher, PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 assessment scores that are within the top 10% of assessment takers in each state for each award program or earned a score of 3 or higher on 2 or more AP Exams in 9th and 10th grade, and the student must attend school in a rural area or small town, or identify as African American/Black, Hispanic American/Latino, or Indigenous/Native.
Eligible students are invited to apply on BigFuture during their sophomore or junior year and are awarded at the start of the next school year in time to share their achievements in high school as they plan for the future. At the same time, colleges and organizations using College Board’s Student Search Service™ can connect directly with awardees during the recruitment process.
