Peer Facilitators Advise on Healthy Relationships

Michelle H. Daino
As leaders within our school community, Peer Facilitators have been going into the Freshman Success Seminar to lead discussions and activities on healthy relationships, communication during a conflict and important tips to use to apologize. Activities have included creating skits to illustrate ways to apologize, ice breakers, acknowledging multiple perspectives of those around you and discussing the importance of honest communication.

Peer Facilitators feel it is essential to highlight these skills to our ninth graders as they navigate building new friendships as high school students.

“As freshman students move through their first year, it is important our students learn the importance of communication and understanding as they grow and develop meaningful relationships with their peers in a supportive environment” says Dana Goad, School Counselor and Peer Facilitator co-moderator.

Giuliana Pelcher '23, a Peer Facilitator who presented on Tuesday, said, "It is important for students to learn about healthy relationships, especially from their peers, as they are the core of our community at Mount. They teach us about effective communication skills, seeing things from new perspectives, and living out the Mercy Core Values."

"High school can be a hard and confusing time for everyone, so it is important to learn different ways to support each other," added Jessica Curran '25. "The kind words and constant support of our peers is what makes the Mount community so special."

Peer Facilitators will additionally be hosting a Half-Way There celebration for all Freshman students in January to bring the freshman community together in recognition of entering the second semester of high school.
