Mount Community Focuses on Mercy Girl Effect

Michelle H. Daino
S. Deirdre Mullan, RSM visited Mount Saint Mary Academy this week to discuss this year's Mercy Girl Effect campaign - "One Team-One Dream: Providing Education for ALL Girls." Members of the Student Council Executive Board met with S. Deirdre to discuss the focus of this year’s campaign. President Renee Vozza ’23 offered welcome remarks beside her fellow council members, Dena Mistichelli ’23, Charlotte Gray ’23, Stefini Drivas ’23, and Mary Claire Schleck ’23

S. Deirdre emphasized that, while education is more readily available and often something we take for granted due to our income levels, it is not easily accessible for families struggling with poverty. She shared the following statistics:
  • Around the world, 129 million girls are out of school, including 32 million from primary school.
  • In countries affected by conflict, girls are more than twice as likely to be out of school as girls living in non-affected countries.
  • Based on current trends, girls will not reach 100 percent lower secondary completion in crisis-affected countries until at least 2063.
By donating to this year’s Mercy Girl Effect, the following impact can be made:
  • $25 will buy school materials for a student for one year.
  • $50 will buy a school uniform, shoes and lunch for one year.
  • $200 will provide a scholarship for a student to attend a technical/training school with tools for carpentry and food for the catering students.
  • $250 will provide for a School in a Box, to be used in emergency situations for children displaced because of war, famine, and climate emergencies.
Throughout the school year, the Student Council will raise money for this project through the following activities: Movie Night (10/21), Powderpuff Game (11/4), school dances, and Mercy Girl Effect t-shirts.
