Mercy Girl Effect Project: Women at the Well

Arianna Salerno '22, the Student Council Executive Board's Director of Communications, recently shared details about plans for the Mercy Girl Effect project. The board also made a special presentation about the project to members of the Mercy Guild on Tuesday evening.

"The 2021-2022 Executive Board has been hard at work since June of 2021. The Mercy Girl Effect project this year is entitled “Women at the Well," said Arianna.

"In many countries around the world, girls and young women are forced to make long journeys to fetch water at the nearest well. Unfortunately, these journeys place them in compromising positions due to a variety of reasons," added Arianna. "Our goal is to raise enough money to build a well that is located in a highly populated area. We strive for this because building a well can prevent many women from making this treacherous journey. Additionally, the construction of a new well will ensure clean, drinkable water."

She added, "The Executive Board had its first fundraising event, the fall dance, on October 1," she shared. "All proceeds went directly to the Mercy Girl Effect."

IMPORTANT FACTS:
  • 2.1 billion people have no safe drinking water
  • 4.5 billion people have no access to adequate sanitation.
  • 700 hundred children die daily from disease due to a lack of clean water.
  • Girls are missing major portions of their school day because they walk long distances to gather water.
