Congratulations to the team of juniors Victoria Fekete '24 and Akshaya Karanam '24 who learned on Wednesday that they have advanced to the final round of the 2023 Quality of Life (QLI) INNOVATIONS competition!
“Participating in QLI has been an incredible experience to research a problem facing our community and develop a solution," shared Victoria and Akshaya. "We focused on the issue of clothing waste and created a plan for 'Legacy Spaces' (clothing rental areas in schools) to both minimize clothing consumption and offer areas for students to donate clothes."
"We are beyond excited to be selected for the final round, because it brings us closer to implementing our solution, and also building these spaces outside our communities as well!” they said.
"I’m extremely impressed by Tori and Shay’s QLI submission," said Kathleen Brennan, Mathematics Department Chairperson. "They spent countless hours researching the environmental impact of the fast fashion industry and came up with a creative and innovative solution that reduces clothing waste among teenagers. The next step is to pitch their idea to a panel of judges on June 1. I wish them the best of luck!!"
Sponsored by W!se (Working in Support of Education), Quality of Life INNOVATIONS (QLI) is a unique social entrepreneurship initiative that fosters a spirit of civic engagement and social innovation among high school students, while helping them prepare for college. Students identify a community issue they care about, conduct primary and secondary research to examine the issue and develop and implement feasible proposals for change. Proposals can compete for college scholarships.
