Speech & Debate Team Competes in Local League

Michelle H. Daino
On Saturday, November 13, seven members of the Mount Saint Mary Academy Forensics Speech & Debate Team competed in our local Catholic Paterson League against five other schools: Delbarton, Villa Walsh, DePaul, Morris Catholic and, this month's host school, Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon.

All our team members earned 22 points or more (out of a possible perfect score of 30) over the three rounds of competition.

Many thanks to our own Dr. Joseph Bonk (English Department Chairperson and an experienced Forensics judge) and Priya Bhaskaran (the mother of team member Akshaya Karanam '24) who judged Forensics Speech for the first time and remarked how she really enjoyed the experience.) Our team is grateful for their support!

Our Mounties performed literary pieces and delivered speeches in the following categories:

Dramatic Interpretation:
Emily Abbott '22  "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut

Oral Interpretation of Prose & Poetry
Grace Glynn '23 "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes and Collected Poems on Bullying

Extemporaneous Speaking:
Taryn Murphy '23 (Each round was given 30 minutes to compose a seven-minute original speech on a current world topic which was then delivered in front of the judge. Taryn's topic dealt with diversifying juries.)

Declamation:
Victoria Fekete '24 "A Roadmap for Young Changemakers" by Melati Wijsen
Akshaya Karanam '24 "How To Put Power of Law in People's Hands" by Vivek Maru
Melissa Ramirez '24 "I'm Not Your Inspiration" by Stella Young
