Union County College – Allied Health Open Houses:  Allied Health and Practical Nursing Open Houses for students who are interested in learning more about these programs and beginning to study at Union County College this Fall.  The Allied Health Open House will be held on March 6, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. and on April 21, 2010, at 6:00 p.m.  Both sessions will be held in the cafeteria on the College’s Plainfield ampus.  RSVP at reception@ucc.edu.  Directions and further information can be found at www.ucc.edu.

School Scholarships

Drew University – Civic Engagement Scholarship – Scholarship awarded to students who have shown leadership in organizing and implementing community projects.  For more information, visit www.drew.edu/cla/scholarships.

Elmira College Key Award – Each year one male and one female from each participating school are honored by the Elmira Committee.  Each student selected received the prestigious Elmira College Key which also holds a scholarship value of $48,000 or $12,000 per year for four years, upon enrolling at Elmira College.  Key winners are also required to visit the campus before December 1st of their senior year to qualify for this award.  This honor scholarship is not based on financial need.
To be eligible:

  • The candidate must be a junior in high school and be confirmed as being in the top 10% of the class; or have an acceptable rank in class in academic courses as determined by the Elmira College Director of Admissions.
  • A minimum academic grade average of 90 is expected; grades in academic courses are considered.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated outstanding school and community leadership.

Local Scholarships

Blanche M. & George L. Watts Mountainside Community Scholarship – A scholarship of $10,000 per year, renewable annually if the student maintains a B average or better.  The scholarship will be granted based on need, grades, extracurricular activities and participation in the community.  Student must reside in Mountainside.  Applications are due by April 15th.  Applications are available in MSMA Office of Student Services.

Central Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority – Legacy of Excellence Scholar – This scholarship is to recognize sophomore African American students.  Each honoree will be invited to a luncheon ceremony and given a special award for his/her exemplary academic excellence and achievement.  To be eligible for recognition, you must have a minimum of a 2.75 average cumulative; co-curricular activities; community and/or church involvement.  In addition, a short essay will be requested.  Please visit www.cjadeltas.org for directions and application.  Applications need to be postmarked by February 27th.

College Women’s Club of Cranford – Scholarship will be awarded to a resident of Cranford ranked in the upper one-third of their senior class and planning to further their education at an accredited institution of higher learning that the applications are available.  Awards are based on academic ability, character, leadership, and service.  The application deadline is April 1, 2010.  Applications are available in the MSMA Office of Student Services.

Community Builders Association of New Jersey Scholarship – Scholarships will be awarded to students in Essex, Morris, Somerset, Union, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties to be applied toward tuition for full-time college attendance in the September 2010 school year.  The award will be made on the basis of demonstrated academic ability, potential and financial need.  Weight will also be given to students contemplating study in the construction or related field such as engineering and architecture or to a student whose parent(s) work in the building industry.  This, however, is not a requirement.  Applications are available in MSMA Office of Student Services.  Application deadline is April 15, 2010.

Department of the Army – U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award Program – One student nominated per high school – Application due May 30, 2010.   Applications can be found in the MSMA Office of Student Services.

Garden Club of Cranford – A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior residing in Cranford with the plans to major in a subject that relates to the Garden Club’s objectives.  These objectives include the protection and conservation of natural resources, improvement of parks and roadsides, the establishment and maintenance of botanical gardens, arboreta and horticultural centers, the support and furthering of environmental protection and beautification, and the advancement of the study of gardening, landscape design, environmental issues, floral design and horticulture.  Students interested in applying for the scholarship may pick up an application at the Cranford Library or by calling 272-5651.  Completed applications are due by April 16.

Junior League of Elizabeth – Plainfield Scholarship – Scholarship awarded to deserving college bound senior women who have gone above and beyond in service to their community through volunteerism.  The criterion for this award specifically emphasizes volunteerism and community service.  Up to three $1,000 scholarships will be presented.  Applications can be found at www.jlepnj.org.  Applications must be postmarked by April 20, 2010.

Junior League of Summit – JLS Shirley Wight Keeney Volunteerism Scholarship:  Two $2,500 Scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteerism in their community.  Applicant must live in Berkeley Heights, Chatham, New Providence, or Summit and must be in the top third of their academic class, and are continuing their education at an accredited four year or two year college or business/vocational school.  Relatives of the Junior League of Summit are not eligible.  Applications are due April 1, 2010.  Applications can be found at www.jlsummit.org on the Home Page under “News and Events” or by following this link www.jlsummit.org/ama/orig/2010_Scholarship_Application.pdf.

Marine Trades Association of New Jersey – Two Scholarships are available:
MTA/NJ Education Scholarship – This scholarship has a value of $3,000 that can be applied towards any marine trades program at any school.
Automotive Training Center – This is a full scholarship ($18,000) for the Marine Service Technology Program at the Automotive Training Center in Pennsylvania.

Ramapo College – Russell Berrie Foundation – Unsung Hero Awards – Three major annual awards are up to $50,000, $35,000, and $25,000 plus many runner-up awards of $2,500 each.  Applications are available in MSMA Office of Student Services.  Applications must be postmarked by March 12, 2010.

Somerset County Federation of Republican Women - $2,000 Scholarship awarded.  Requirements are as follows:

  • Female resident of Somerset County for at least 12 months.
  • Graduating Senior from a Somerset County Secondary School.
  • Completion of a 7590 word or less essay on the given topic “Why is it important to have more women involved in politics” in Arial 10 font double spaced.
  • Scholarship money will be awarded upon acceptance at an accredited four year college or university.
  • Appear at the SCFRW Millicent Fenwick Brunch.

The scholarship will be awarded based on content, creativity, and format.  The winner must provide an electronic version of the essay and be willing to have it publicized.  Application and requirements must be postmarked by March 10, 2010.  For further information, visit www.scfrw.com.

The 200 Club of Somerset County – Scholarship for high school seniors whom themselves or have a parent living in and actively serving Somerset County in one of the following public safety branches:  Police and Law Enforcement, Fire Department, Volunteer Ambulance Corps/First Aid Squad, State Police.  The Scholarship program was established to aid children of actively serving public safety personnel in their desire to attend college or vocational school or to acquire other post-high school education.  Applicants will be judged on the basis of SAT scores, class standing, citizenship, and family financial need.  Applications are due March 19, 2010.    Applications are available in MSMA Office of Student Services.  Due date is March 19, 2010.

The B.I.G. Believe, Inspire, Grow Scholarship – Business Scholarship - The B.I.G. Scholarship recipient will receive a cash award of at least $350.00.  Criteria includes:  Minimum 3.5 GPA, Participation in community service activities, Teacher recommendation of 100 words or less describing attributes and ambition, Senior female, Must be a resident of Bernardsville, Bedminster, Peapack-Gladstone, or Basking Ridge.  Applications are available in MSMA Office of Student Services.

Wallenberg Foundation of New Jersey, Inc., - The Wallenberg Honors Program – The Program is designed to recognize students from Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren Counties who act with courage and compassion in their service to others, in the performance of an act of heroism or bravery, or in promoting understanding acceptance, tolerance and peace in their school or community.  Application and information can be found at www.wallenbergfoundationofnj.org.  Click on “Wallenberg Honors Program-Application for 2010”.  Application form is due by March 26, 2010.

Summer and Other Varied Programs
Boston University Summer Programs:  Each program below includes a beneficial presentation by experienced Boston University Admissions officers, focusing on the best strategies for the college application process.  As well as providing an academic opportunity, our programs introduce students to the social dynamics of college life – and to the city of Boston.  Every year, students form strong friendships as they tackle their coursework and participate in a range of group activities designed to foster a tight-knit community, such as going to the theater, touring the city, following Boston’s famous freedom Trail, and enjoying one of New England’s beaches.  For further information on the following programs, call 617-353-1378 or email buhssumr@bu.edu or visit www.bu.edu/summer/highschool.

  • High School Honors – A six week residential or commuter program in which students take two Boston University undergraduate courses, earning up to eight transferable college credits.  Students entering their senior year of high school in Fall of 2010 or exceptional rising juniors will be considered.
  • Research Internship in Science and Engineering – A six week residential or commuter program in which students work in a lab conducting scientific research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.  Students must be entering their senior year of high school in fall 2010 to be considered.
  • Summer Challenge – A two week residential program for students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year in fall 2010.  Enrolling in two non-credit seminars designed specifically for the program, students can explore the subjects of abnormal psychology, business, creative writing, engineering, history of Boston, infectious diseases, international politics, journalism, law, mass communication, nutrition, persuasive writing, topics in philosophy, and visual arts.
  • Summer Preview – A one week commuter program in which students can delve into one subject and look ahead to the college experience.  Students choose from either Discovering Biology or Learning the Art of Writing.  Participants must be entering their freshman or sophomore year in fall 2010.

Careers in Healthcare Fair – Overlook Hospital Auditorium – March 18th between 3:00 and 6:00 – Representatives of various healthcare careers will describe their jobs and the education required.  These representatives plan to bring some of the instruments they use, if possible, for a mini “show and tell”.  It takes approximately 45-60 minutes to visit all of the booths.  Students and/or parents may attend on their own if they like.  Please RSVP by March 11th to Helen.kaufman@atlantichealth.org.

Cornell University – Expanding Your Horizons – Inspiring the next generation of women in Science, Math, and Engineering:  This year’s full-day conference will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Cornell University.  Female students enrolled in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade are invited to attend this program.  The primary goals of the conference are to stimulate girls’ interest in math and science and to encourage them to pursue related careers.  Registration will begin on February 24th and fills up quickly.  Register online at www.ccmr.cornell.edu/eyh.  The fee for the conference is $15 per student.

Denison University, Granville, Ohio - Jonathan R. Reynolds Young Writers Workshop – June 13 thru June 20 – This eight day workshop encourages current high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to explore, discover, and affirm the craft of writing while in residence on the campus of Denison University.  The workshop establishes a community of respect and sharing in which the student will learn what it means to be a writer through daily workshops, group talks, readings, informal encounters with writers, one-on-one conferences, and other events.  For detailed information, visit www.denison.edu/english/reynolds.

Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, a non-profit educational organization, offers summer educations courses for students to foster greater interest in U.S. history, civics, and engaged citizenship.  The program runs July 18th thru July 23rd.  Service Learning in Public Policy is a new advanced leadership program for academically motivated 9th, 10th, 11th grade students.  The program is specifically designed for high school achievers who want to apply their leadership skills to key public policy issues that affect their lives and the world.  For detailed information, please visit the MSMA Office of Student Services.  Please note enrollment is based strictly on recommendations from teachers, principals, and guidance counselors.  Please inform your counselor if you are interested in this program.

Georgetown University – Summer program gives highly motivated students the opportunity to earn college credit and advance their academic skills through a variety of challenging learning experiences lasting from eight days to ten weeks.  For detailed information, visit summer.georgetown.edu/hoyas.  Limited partial tuition scholarships are also available for credit programs.

Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY World Leadership Congress Ambassador) – July 23-30 at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA); cost of program $1,500 which includes program fees, room and board, meals, and transportation during the program.  Not included in the fee is travel to and from Los Angeles and the cost of transportation from the point of entry to the campus and back on departure day.  There are a total of 277 spaces available to U.S. students.  For detailed information, visit www.hoby.org//faqsforwlc.php.  Please note this program is first paid, first served.  Application is available on www.hoby.org.

Naval Academy Summer Seminar – Any students interested in considering applying to the Naval Academy may like to apply for a six-day program in June (3 choices, June 5-10, 12-17, 19-24) for a summer seminar.  Applications are available on the USNA website, www.usna.edu/admissions.

Pratt Institute Pre-College Program – Student are immersed in a program of art, design, architecture, creative writing, or critical and visual studies, modeled after Pratt’s undergraduate offerings.  The Pre-College curriculum consists of four classes, as well as lectures and cultural and social events.  Students select an Elective course in their area of interest, and are automatically enrolled in a foundation course as well as an Art History Appreciation class, and a Portfolio Development class, to complement their elective of choice.  The Elective and Foundation courses are credit bearing (2credits each) and upon completion of the program, students earn four elective college credits.  The following courses are available:  Architecture, Art and Design Discovery, The Art of Teaching Art: S/He Who Can, Teaches Art, Creative Writing, Critical and Visual Studies, Fashion Design, Fine Arts/Painting and Drawing, Graphic Design, Illustration (Digital), Illustration (Traditional), Industrial Design, Interactive Arts, Interior Design, Jewelry/Metal Arts, Media Arts/Video, Photography, Sculpture, Sequential Art and the Comic Book.  For more information, visit www.pratt.edu/prostudies.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Design your Future Day Program – April 17, 2010:  This program is for very talented high school junior girls or sophomore girls who are on an accelerated math or science tract.  This day long program is designed to support the national effort to increase the number of women pursuing careers in engineering, science, and technology.  This program is free to high school girls and their parent/guardians who attend.  For further information or registration forms, visit www.eng.rpi.edu/dyfd/.  Packets for registration are also available in MSMA Office of Student Services.

St. Peter’s College – Summer Scholars Class – July 7th – August 5th from 9:00 until noon on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week.   The classes will be conducted on a colloquium model:  Monday, general Scholars meeting, and Wednesday and Thursday, individual class meetings.  General Scholars meetings will include performances and presentations by scholars and professionals representing the various fields of studies represented in the Summer Scholars Program: the sciences, the arts, and the social sciences.  Descriptions of 2010 courses, application forms, and detailed information can be found at www.spc.edu/summerscholars.  The cost of the program is $400.  Deadline is April 16, 2010.

Susquehanna University – Leadership Institute for Entrepreneurship – July 11 thru 17 – Live the life of an entrepreneur this summer with the Susquehanna University’s Sigmund Weis School of Business.  The Leadership Institute for Entrepreneurship (LIFE) provides high school students with an exclusive leadership opportunity rarely available to students of this age.  Working in a simulated entrepreneurial setting, students will start and run their own business.  During this week, they will acquire leadership and team-building skills, develop new friendships and learn valuable lessons from the pros.  Highlights of the Week include:  Welcome and Ice Cream Social, Entrepreneurship Presentations, Knoebels Grove and Hershey Park Visits, Harley Davidson Plant Tour, Formal End-of Session Presentations, Dining Etiquette, Talent Show.  For specific details involved in program, visit www.susqu.edu/life.
