The goal of the admissions process is to allow the prospective student and her family ample opportunity to gain valuable information and insights about Mount Saint Mary Academy. The process also allows the Academy to get to know each student and best assess her candidacy. The admissions process involves several important steps and many opportunities. Review the procedures below based on your current grade.
For students in the seventh grade:
Open House, an annual event in October, is a great opportunity for prospective families to tour the campus, meet faculty, staff, and students, and gain insights into the Mount's academic and extracurricular programs.
Freshman for a Day
Prospective students are invited to shadow a current Mount student for the duration of the school day. They will attend classes, meet students and teachers, and dine in our Student Center for lunch. Each student must complete a questionnaire prior to her visit so the Mount can best match her with a hostess for the day. Seventh graders may schedule Freshman for a Day visits beginning in the spring.
Please contact the Office of Admissions for the dates.
For students in the eighth grade:
Even if the student has attended Open house in the seventh grade, the event presents an excellent opportunity to obtain information and gain an even better sense of the many components of the Mount experience.
Freshman for a Day
A Freshman for a Day visit is a requirement for all applicants. Each student must complete a questionnaire prior to her visit so the Mount can best match her with a current student. Eighth graders may schedule Freshman for a Day visits beginning in mid-October.
The Mount offers its own entrance exam which is used to determine scholarships and merit-based aid, in addition to helping determine if students satisfy academic criteria. Pre-registration for the test is required. The test typically takes place during early November.
All candidates for admission must complete a formal application after taking the entrance exam. At the time of application, students have a choice between two admissions tracks. The top choice track allows students to select the Mount as their first choice high school. Their applications are due at the end of November and their interviews will take place in December. Students who opt for the regular track have an application deadline in December and have interviews the following January.
At the time the application is completed, the $75 application fee and a copy of the student's birth certificate are required.
Transcripts and Letters of Recommendation
In addition to completing the required paperwork, students must obtain official transcripts including sixth, seventh, and eighth grade marks. In addition, they must obtain two letters of recommendation providing a narrative description of the candidate's qualifications. Letters may be obtained from teachers, non-academic advisors, counselors, or coaches. A teacher evaluation form must also be completed by the student's English teacher and by her math teacher. All letters and transcripts should be sent to Ms. Donna Toryak in the Admissions Office.
Upon completion of the formal application and submission of all required materials, a personal interview is scheduled with the applicant and her parents. The family will meet with a member of the Admissions Board to discuss qualifications and expectations. Interviews take place in December and January.
The Admissions Board meets to discuss all applicant files after interviews are held. Top track candidates are notified of their status in mid-December. Regular track applicants receive notification in late January. Accepted students receptions are held in the late winter to give new families a chance to meet one another.
For transfer students entering grades 10 & 11:
Transfer students who are able are encouraged to attend Open House and all are required to schedule a Student for a Day visit. In some cases, entrance testing is required and can be scheduled on an individual basis through the early spring or until enrollment is closed for their class year. Interested candidates should contact the Admissions Office for additional information.
